Coyotes were sighted at Shiloh Ranch Regional Park in Windsor. Regional Parks has contacted the Sonoma Co Agricultural Commission Office & California Department of Fish and Game to help investigate this incident and collaborate on effective, professional, and selective strategies (if required) to resolve any potential conflicts between humans and coyotes at Shiloh Ranch.
Coyotes are a very important part of our ecosystem because they keep certain populations such as mice and rabbits in control. January through May is breeding season for coyotes. During these months park users must take extra precautions not to disturb the coyotes or their dens where they keep their pups. Since they are active mostly early in the morning and late in the evening it is rare that people come into contact with them.
Coyotes are naturally timid animals that tend to shy away from people. However, you should never feed a coyote because this may cause them to lose their natural fear and become aggressive towards humans. Please remember wild animals don’t need your handouts, they need your respect!
A coyote that becomes aggressive may attack people or their pets. Please abide by the following safety guidelines to keep all park users safe.
• Never intentionally feed a coyote
• Never approach or try to touch a coyote
• To avoid attracting them to your area, don’t leave potential food sources laying out
• Never leave young children unattended
• Always keep pets on a leash
• Use negative reinforcement such as yelling, clapping, and making loud noises if a you do come upon a coyote
• Please notify Sonoma County Regional Parks (707) 565-2041 if a coyote is aggressive and seems to lack fear of humans.
• In case of an emergency always call 911
