¡Dia de la Independencia!

Mexico gained independence from Spain on August 24, 1821. But it is not that day that Mexico and Mexicans celebrate. Rather the fireworks fly on September 16, when, in 1810, the revolt against Spanish rule first began with a battle cry, known as “El Grito,” from a single priest, Miguel Hidalgo. This call to revolution turned into the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted 11 years, until Spain finally recognized Mexico‘s sovereignty. But, of course, learning the history isn’t as fun as going to a Dia de la Independencia celebration, like the one on September 12, 1– 8 p.m., on Main Street in Kelseyville.
