What’s in an Acorn?

We may see woodpeckers and squirrels collect them. But humans can eat them, too. Acorns are actually a traditional source of nutrition for Pomo Native Americans. And at the Gifts from the Oaks: Stories of Acorn Preparation class, Bernadette Smith, a member of the Manchester Band of Pomo Indians, will talk about how to prepare them. Participants may get to watch a demonstration of one way to make acorn porridge and even get to taste the results. The class will be held on November 13 at 1 p.m. at Old Smith Ranch Preserve north of Fort Bragg. Go to mendocinolandtrust.org for more information and to register.
