How do you help children understand racially motivated crimes? PBS KIDS seeks to help parents and educators answer that question with its virtual event, “Talking to Children Authentically about Race and Racism.” The event will be held via YouTube on June 9 at 12:30 p.m. PST. At the event, parents, educators, and child development and trauma experts will come together to talk about racial injustice and violence against African-Americans. Discussion topics will include: How can parents of Black children continue to instill confidence and pride in young kids while also explaining the racial inequity and barriers that continue today? And, how can parents of non-Black children help young kids understand their role in confronting anti-Black racism? Speakers will include Jamal Berry, director of Educare Washington, D. C.; Dr. Dana Winters, director of Simple Interactions and faculty director of Academic Programs at the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media; Dr. Renee Wilson Simmons, executive director of the ACE Awareness Foundation; and Will Tolliver, early learning expert.
